Video Optimization for SEO

January 26, 2009 // Drew Stauffer

A few weeks ago you might have seen my video titled video blogging 101, which explained how to get started video blogging and provided information on possible programs that you could use. I also mentioned that I was going to do another video on how to optimize your video once it was ready to be released to the public.

Unfortunately, I got too busy and the follow-up video got pushed to the side. I was still trying to make time for it when I saw a video covering the same topic on SEOmoz a few days ago.  Rand and crew do a great job with their Whiteboard Fridays, so instead of repeating the same info, I decided to post their video here.

Here are some of the issues that are highlighted in the video:

  1. How do I get indexed?
  2. Where can I rank?
  3. Where do I host the video?
  4. How can I optimize the video?
  5. Should I use mass-posting services?

Video Blogging 101

December 8, 2008 // Drew Stauffer

Video Blogging is going to be a big part of search engine rankings and website development in the next couple of years. It’s possible that as early as the first part of 2009 we could start to see some ranking changes based on whether or not your competition has video on a similar subject.

A few days ago after watching a video with Bruce Clay on WebProNews, I got the video blogging bug. I went home that night and figured out my plan for how I was going to get started.

So I thought for my first video post I would blog about how to get started video blogging. A Video Blogging 101 if you will. This video is all about what programs I used and how I did everything from start to finish.

What is SearchWiki?

November 27, 2008 // Drew Stauffer

SearchWiki has gotten quite a bit of buzz since it launched a few days ago. With both positive and negative feedback, it will be interesting to watch this new feature develop.

Over at Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan had a nice Q & A with Cedric Dupont, Google’s SearchWiki product manager; Johanna Wright, Director of Product Management at Google and Google software engineer Corin Anderson to get some more details about the specifics of SearchWiki.

Here is a video directly from Google explaining exactly what SearchWiki is and what it can do for you.

Do you think this will change the way SEOs do their job? Give me your opinion in the comments below.

How I Gained 20,000 Links in Two Months

September 17, 2008 // Drew Stauffer

Now I know what you’re thinking,”No way you could do that unless you got to the front page of Digg.” Close, but not quite.

I remember a few years ago when inbound links started getting very popular. Everyone in the SEO world was scouring the web for as many links as possible because we learned that inbound links were one of the big determining factors in how well your website ranked.

Google Now Indexing and Crawling Flash

July 2, 2008 // Drew Stauffer

Judging by the buzz around the web today you would think that Google can now index all flash files. While this is partially true, I’m still a bit hesitant.

Adobe announced the news today, while Google explained things a bit, here and here and Vanessa Fox from Search Engine Land wrote up a very informative post explaining more clearly what Adobe and Google were trying to say.

One part that really puzzled me was the wording that Google used when explaining their new process for indexing flash files.

Who’s running your SEO firm?

March 28, 2008 // Drew Stauffer

Being employed by an agency and having my own SEO firm, I talk shop to a lot of individuals about SEO. Often, SEO is very new to people and I end up having to do a lot of talking. I certainly don’t mind though because I love what I do and I could talk about it all day long.

What I don’t understand is when clients want to rule the SERPs, seemingly want to know everything about SEO, hire you to do their optimization, and then they don’t want to implement the SEO that your firm suggests. It’s almost like they like the idea of SEO but not the actual work.

Directories for Links or Traffic?

November 21, 2007 // Drew Stauffer

Easy inbound links…ahh if only they were really that easy, or are they? We’ve all seen those ads that promise manual submissions to hundreds of directories for some fee. But then again, most of us know that the majority of traffic from search engines comes from the 4 big ones, Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.

So is it a wise investment in your marketing plan to purchase this service? I guess it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. I can’t see actually obtaining that much traffic from an obscure search engine that no one has heard of, but the chances of Google seeing your listing in their directory and giving you credit for a link is a lot better.

Organic SEO - Now is the Time

November 1, 2007 // Drew Stauffer

Organic SEO consists of optimizing websites naturally with good keyword research, developing with web standard code, and letting the search engines do their work. Implementing an effective viral marketing campaign to obtain easy inbound links is also a great way to boost your rankings, but once again you want it to occur naturally, hence the organic SEO.

In case you haven’t been paying attention to any Internet news lately, Google is trying to scare people from buying links solely for the purpose of manipulating their rankings. Honestly I don’t really have a problem with this because I have never really gotten into buying links. I mainly practice organic and on-site SEO which I feel benefits my clients the most since many of them are smaller companies that do not have thousands of dollars to devote to an ongoing SEO campaign.

Start today developing your website with quality on-site SEO and you won’t have to worry about chasing algorithms or the latest trends in Internet marketing. Organic SEO is and continues to be a cost effective way to dominate the SERPs.
